Vintage Images Of Coca Cola Adverts
Coca-Cola is a carbonated soft drink which was first invented by an American pharmacist and Confederate State army veteran called John Stith Pemberton, who lived between 1831 and 1888. It was reported that Pemberton had suffered a sabre wound while he was serving during the Battle of Columbus, in the final month of the American Civil War in 1865. The ensuing torment he endured from his crippling injury, led him to become a morphine addict. And over time he made a desperate attempt to rescue himself from a debilitating dependency. Pemberton began an intrepid search, conducting experimentations with natural health remedies, which were less addictive than painkillers. Pemberton's initial intention was to create a natural non-alcoholic and none-addictive health drink, which he could continue to drink over a long period of time, without suffering any harmful side effects. Over the course of Pemberton's numerous beverage experiments, he stumbled upon what was considered to be, at that time, a uniquely palatable and refreshing beverage.
Cocoa Evergreen Trees
On 8 May 1886, Pemberton sold his first original Coca-Cola beverage at the Jacob's Pharmacy in the City of Atlanta, America. Although it is widely known that the two basic ingredients for Coca-Cola are coca leaves and Kola nuts, the much sought after complete formula for the classic Coca-Cola beverage, remains a closely guarded secret to the present day. Cola acuminata and Cola nitida (brownish coloured caffeine-containing nuts) are grown from evergreen trees of the cocoa family which are native to tropical Africa, but are known to be cultivated extensively in the American tropics. The Coca-Cola beverage remains America's most enduring and successful soft drink brand, which is currently sold in over 200 countries around the world.
In 1888 Pemberton sold Coca-Cola's ownership rights to Asa Griggs Candler (1851-1929), who was a wealthy American businessman and politician (Candler became the 41 mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, and was in office between (1916-1919). Asa Candler had envisioned the Coca Cola enterprise to be a potentially great prospect and decided to act quickly, so he seized the opportunity by placing an offer to Pemberton for the purchase of the Coca Cola recipe in 1888, the sum of $238.98. And subsequently Candler founded his Coca Cola company in 1892, after which he used his wealth, marketing experiences, his business acumen and business connections to develop what was to become one of America's most lucrative and successful beverage organizations within the United States, and ultimately a multibillion-dollar industry across the entire world.

The Coca Cola Logo
Frank Mason Robinson (1845-1923) was the American book keeper of Pemberton Chemical Company, who became famous for the creation of the iconic Coca Cola logo which has spanned over a hundred years. Frank Robinson decided to name the beverage 'Coca-Cola' because he concluded that the two C's would look pleasing together to the spectator, and he added the lettering style known as Spencerian script for the Coca Cola text which created a vivid and captivating imagery. In addition, combining the colour red for the trademarked logo was introduced in 1948. And according to the company, the idea for using the colour red originally arose when barrels of Coca Cola bottles were painted red, so that tax agents could distinguish them from alcohol during transportation.
